August 25, 2009 – Firefighters remain at the scene of the fire at the woodworking plant on Osprey Drive in Ancaster.
Status Update:
The fire is under control at this time and Hamilton Emergency Services has reduced the number of firefighters on the scene. Foam is still being applied to the fire by one foam truck from the Hamilton Airport and firefighters are working at extinguishing spot fires under collapsed portions of the building. Excavation equipment is on site to remove debris so firefighters can better access the spot fires.
Smoke conditions have improved, but throughout the morning wind directions have changed and many areas throughout Hamilton reported the sight and smell of smoke as a result. The Ministry of Environment is currently on site taking air samples.
Road closures in the immediate area of the fire are still in place.
Health & Safety Recommendations:
Hamilton Emergency Service – Fire is recommending the following precautionary measures:
· Stay in place.
· Close your windows as a precaution.
· Avoid going outdoors if possible.
· If you have an air handling system, shut down the air intake.
Further updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
