HAMILTON, ON – May 5, 2009 – Just in time to plan for the weekend, the City of Hamilton’s Food Safety Zone website has gone live. The site allows you to view inspection results for Hamilton food premises right on your own computer.
Through Food Safety Zone users can:
- search for food premises by name, type, location or compliance history
- view inspection summaries that include the type of inspection conducted, the findings of the inspection and any action taken by inspectors
- link to a list of food premises recently convicted of food safety violations or issued Orders under the Health Protection and Promotion Act.
“We’re launching the Food Safety Zone to give Hamiltonians better access to inspection information – something they’ve said they want so they can make an informed choice about where to buy their food,” says Dr. Elizabeth Richardson, Hamilton’s Medical Officer of Health. “With easy public access to inspection information we hope to continue to increase regulatory compliance and safe food handling practices among our food premises.”
The site is possible because of a new electronic data collection system that was implemented by Public Health Services in the Fall of 2008. As these new inspection reports are entered in to this system they will be transferred to the Food Safety Zone. There are currently inspections on approximately 900 premises available on-line with more on the way. These inspection records date back just to the Fall of 2008 but the database will grow as more inspections are completed.
The Food Safety Zone is available at http://www.foodsafetyzone.ca.
