Pandemic H1N1 Influenza

HAMILTON, ON -  June 30, 2009 – The City of Hamilton’s Public Health Services reports that one individual with the H1N1 virus, a 41 year old female from Hamilton, has passed away. It is not known at this time whether or not the H1N1 virus is a factor in the death, as the individual had underlying health conditions.

“Our sincere condolences go out to the loved ones of this individual,” said Dr. Chris Mackie, Hamilton’s Associate Medical Officer of Health. “Although it’s most often mild, influenza can be fatal, particularly in individuals with underlying health conditions. This death emphasizes the need to be vigilant in preventing the spread of the virus.”

With the majority of cases in Hamilton and Ontario there have been only mild symptoms. In Hamilton, there continues to be community spread of the virus.

Public Health would like to remind citizens that there are simple measures to prevent the spread of the flu such as frequent hand washing with soap and water or a hand sanitizer, covering your cough by coughing or sneezing into your sleeve, staying home when you’re sick, and by maintaining healthy habits such as eating well and getting enough sleep.
