Parainfluenza outbreak at HHS

HAMILTON, ON - July 2, 2009An outbreak of Parainfluenza 3 was declared earlier this week in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at McMaster University Medical Site.

Three babies in a unit of 44 babies were confirmed to have the Parainfluenza 3 on June 27. There have been no new cases since then. The unit remains open to visitors and admissions, and the three affected babies are in protective isolation and being monitored closely. All are responding to care.

Parainfluenza 3 is not an influenza virus, and is not associated with the Influenza A H1N1 (swine flu) virus. Parainfluenza 3 is a seasonal type virus associated with respiratory symptoms such as a cough and fever. Most cases do not require treatment and the virus is commonly seen in infants during spring and summer months.

"While this is technically an outbreak, parainfluenza is generally a mild illness similar to the common cold", said Dr. Chris Mackie, Hamilton’s Associate Medical Officer of Health. "The hospital has taken appropriate steps and implemented infection control measures to stop the spread of the virus. This virus is not related to the H1N1 Influenza A that is currently circulating in the community."
