City responding to heavy rain and flooding (Update #3 – 9:00 pm)

HAMILTON, ON – July 26, 2009 – The City’s Emergency Control Group has disbanded but will continue to monitor the situation and respond to immediate localized issues.

Update:

Water levels in the wet well at the Wastewater Treatment Plant remain stable. All flooding was localized and not a result of any problems at the wastewater plant. The wastewater plant remains fully operational and is no longer running on back-up generation. The concern of flooding from the wastewater plant has been eliminated.

Now that the rain has subsided, the City remains confident that we can handle any other issues throughout the night.

Please note:

Valley Park Community Centre has opened as a relief centre for impacted residents who need a place to stay and will remain open until 10 p.m. tonight. The centre is located at 970 Paramount Drive (Paramount and Mud Street).

Important numbers:

For any electrical emergencies residents are asked to call Horizon Utilities at: 905-522-6611

A flooding damages hotline has also been activated. All inquiries regarding damage claims resulting from this flooding event should be directed to 905-667-3157.

  • Various other local roads in the City

Health & Safety Tips regarding water wells:

If you use well water and you have had flooding in your area, your well water may have been contaminated. You should boil your water or use another water source until you have ensured that your water is safe. You will need to inspect your well carefully to assess the impact of the flooding, and may need to repair and/or disinfect your well before using it.
