City of Hamilton says "Lights Out" as part of Earth Hour campaign

HAMILTON , ON – February 27, 2009 The City of Hamilton is confirming its participation once again in Earth Hour, a global campaign that began last year in Sydney, Australia to take action against climate change. The campaign promotes the simple action of turning off the lights for one hour beginning at 8:30 p.m. on March 28th to deliver a powerful message about the need for action on global warming.

As part of Earth Hour efforts, the City of Hamilton will work with community partners, residents and businesses to lead a Lights Out community awareness campaign to encourage citizens and businesses to make a habit of turning off unnecessary lighting year round. More details about this initiative will be shared in the coming weeks.

The City will lead by example and will turn off all unnecessary lighting in corporate facilities. Traffic signals and street lighting will remain operational for safety reasons. The City will arrange for a photo to be taken from the top of the escarpment to showcase the community’s collaboration and commitment to positive change as we work together to turn off unnecessary lighting during Earth Hour.

"The City of Hamilton is pleased to demonstrate our continued support for the Earth Hour initiative by incorporating a community-driven Lights Out campaign," said Mayor Fred Eisenberger. "We hope to inspire other organizations and individuals to take action – not just on March 28th, but everyday – to contribute to a healthier, more sustainable community."

Hamilton’s energy consumption from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on March 28th will be monitored and evaluated by Horizon Utilities and the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO).
