In November 2000, Hamilton was the recipient of a cash prize as part of the Dubai International Award for Best Practices to Improve the Living Environment. Hamilton was recognized for the VISION 2020 Sustainable Community Initiative and Clean Air Hamilton partnership as one of the 10 best practices in the world that integrate good governance with community empowerment and integrating the concept of sustainability into policies and program management.
After much deliberation with community groups, it was decided that the cash award should be used in a lasting marker to educate and inform people about sustainable communities and how the Clean Air partnership and other community actions help make VISION 2020 a reality.
Ultimately, the decision was made to place plaques on trail distance markers along the Waterfront Trail and inscribe the names of the VISION 2020 Sustainable Community Award winners, in permanent recognition of those outstanding individuals in the community working toward Hamilton's VISION. Descriptive panels are also placed at both ends of the trail. Thanks to the Waterfront Trust and Werner Plessl for helping make this project a reality.
