Teachers Guide to the National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI)

A Teacher’s Guide to the National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) has been published by the Canadian Institute for Environmental Law and Policy (CIELAP).  This guide includes activities that let school children use NPRI data to visualize what chemicals are being released into the air and water of their communities. The guide is for anyone who is concerned about the pollutants released into our community, what these pollutants can do to our health, and how to interpret the results of this data and take action.

Earth Day Art Project

VISION 2020 is an image of a better community, a goal that we have been striving towards since 1992. It is based on principles of "sustainable development" which considers the well-being of both people and the natural environment while promoting public participation and fairness. Sustainable development is based on local values and takes a long-term perspective to try and ensure that our individual and collective decisions will help to create the community we have envisioned. VISION 2020 is a collection of goals, strategies, indicators and actions that citizens and local government use to build the vision and measure our progress.

On Earth Day 2001, grade 4, 5, and 6 students from local Hamilton schools participated in the Vision 2020-Earth Day School Art Project. The students created artwork that represented one of the Vision 2020 concepts. All of the submitted artwork was displayed at Earth Day celebrations around the City.

This is a project that you could easily do with your children at home. Just follow these easy steps:

  1. Read the VISION to your child so that he / she can visualize images of what some of the concepts in VISION 2020 might look like in real life
  2. Have him / her choose one of the concepts
  3. Have your child express his / her ideas in a chosen media.

This is a great way to familiarize your children with Vision 2020 and all of its related concepts. Have fun, be creative, and learn about the environment!
