City celebrates Frank A. Cooke’s contribution to transit in Hamilton
HAMILTON, ON – The City held a civic dedication ceremony this morning at the terminal located at 1 MacNab Street South (formerly MacNab Transit Terminal) in honour of Frank Cooke. Members of the Cooke family, City Council, City staff and members of the public were in attendance.
The terminal was renamed in accordance with the City’s Municipal Property and Building Naming Policy. Mr. Cooke is recognized for his four-decade-long career with the Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) and his volunteer service to the community.
“Frank A. Cooke was a distinguished public servant who exemplified a strong sense of duty toward his community. Throughout his life, Mr. Cooke championed public transit in Hamilton and beyond, and remained an engaged citizen who worked to build and improve our city.”
Mayor Fred Eisenberger
“The Hamilton Street Railway has a long and proud history of serving the people of Hamilton. Today HSR continues to build on the strong foundation built by Mr. Cooke and it’s only fitting that we celebrate his contributions by renaming the downtown terminal in his honour.”
Maureen Cosyn Heath, Director of Transit, Hamilton Street Railway
“Our family is honoured that our Grampa’s legacy as a champion for public transit across Canada is being recognized in the city that he called home for 100 years. Frank Cooke was deeply dedicated to his family, to Hamilton and to the HSR.”
