Testing Private Well Water for Bacteria - Safe Water

Testing for Bacteria is Free

Public Health Services urges rural well and cistern owners to have their drinking water tested for bacteria on a regular basis. Test results for 2007 show that approximately 28% of water samples taken from private residential wells and cisterns in Hamilton have unsafe levels of bacteria. Public Health Services recommends that owners of these drinking systems test their water at least 3 times a year.

Unacceptable levels of bacteria, such as E.coli can contaminate a private water supply and put the health of those who use it at risk. Even a very small change in the well's structure, such as crack or a change in the environment such as heavy rain can result in significant changes in your water quality.

Rural residents with private wells and cisterns are reminded to check the safety of their private well supply, know where their well is located, and to make sure that their water supply is constructed properly and protected from contamination sources.

Pick-up and Drop-off Locations

Check the table below for the nearest location to pick-up your testing kit and drop-off your water sample.

We do not accept water samples from untreated surface water such as lakes, streams and ponds. Sample freshness is essential for adequate testing. Bring the sample to the drop-off location within 12 hours of collection and keep it cool in transit.

Hours of operation for Municipal Service Centres and Public Health Services are Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm (except the Public Health Lab which is open Monday to Friday 8:30 am - 4:00 pm). Hours of additional pick-up locations may vary.
