The Medical Officer of Health for the City of Hamilton has called a Cold Weather Alert effective the evening of February 5, 2010. A Cold Alert is issued when current or anticipated weather conditions are at or below minus 15 degrees Celsius or minus 20 with wind chill. This alert will remain in effect until a cancellation notice is issued.

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake devastated the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, at about 5 p.m. on Tuesday, January 12. The Red Cross is now estimating that between 45,000 and 50,000 people might have died as a result of the earthquake’s devastation. The federal government has announced it will match Canadians' donations to registered charitable organizations up to $50 million.
