Holiday Closures

Civic Holiday August 3, 2015 - What's Open and What's Closed?

All City of Hamilton administrative offices will be closed on Civic Holiday, Monday, August 3, 2015.

For emergencies involving roads, water mains, sewer systems, public health and safety issues, please call 905-546-CITY (2489).

Green Cart, Recycling and Garbage Collection

  • There will be no green bin, blue box, bulk waste, yard waste, or garbage pick-up on Monday, August 3.
  • Pick up will be one day later than your regularly scheduled collection day.
  • Waste must be at the curb by 7 am.

Community Recycling Centres and Transfer Stations will be closed on Monday, August 3.

HSR Bus Schedules

  • The HSR will be operating on a Sunday/ Holiday Schedule on Monday, August 3.
  • Call HSR information at 905-527-4441 for more details.

ATS - DARTS

  • DARTS will be operating holiday service hours on Monday, August 3. All subscription trips on DARTS, with the exception of dialysis, are cancelled for Monday, August 3. If passengers need to travel on this day, they must make an advance reservation to do so.
  • ATS customer service will be closed on Monday, August 3.

Hamilton Civic Museums

  • Dundurn National Historic Site, Whitehern Historic House, Battlefield House Museum, Hamilton Museum of Steam & Technology, The Hamilton Military Museum, Fieldcote Museum and Griffin House will be closed, Monday, August 3.
  • The Hamilton Children’s Museum is currently closed for renovations.

Ontario Works

  • All Ontario Works offices will be closed on Monday, August 3, and will reopen Tuesday, August 4 at 8:30 am.
  • The Employment Resource Centre located at 181 Main St. W (Career Development Centre) will be closed on Monday, August 3. It will be open to assist you with any employment service needs on Tuesday, August 4 at 8:30 am.

Animal Services

  • The Animal Services Shelter will be closed on Sunday, August 2 and Monday, August 3.
  • For 24-hour Animal Services emergency issues, please call: 905-574-3433.

Property Tax Payments

  • During the holiday, you may submit your property tax payment into a drop box at the rear doors of City Hall, 71 Main Street West or at one of our Municipal Service Centres.
  • All Municipal Service Centres will be closed on Monday, August 3, and will reopen on Tuesday, August 4.

  • Dundas: 60 Main St. (map)
  • Flamborough: 7 Innovation Drive, First floor (map) New - temporary location

Parking Violations

Online payments can be made at: www.hamilton.ca/parking

Payment of Parking Violations can be made by mail to the pre-printed address indicated on the parking tag or dropped off into the drop box at the nearest Municipal Service Centre (see addresses above) or Taxation Division (noted above). The Hamilton Municipal Parking System office at 80 Main St. West, at Summers Lane, also accepts payments for parking violations at its drop box.

Special Supports Program

The Special Supports Program provides a wide range of health related benefits to City residents living independently in the community to improve their quality of life, health, wellness, safety and self-sufficiency.

Health related benefits include but are not limited to:

  • Bathroom assistive devices such as grab bars, commodes etc.
  • Diabetic supplies
  • Hearing aids and batteries
  • Custom foot orthotics and orthopedic footwear
  • Hospital bed and mattress
  • Surgical, incontinent and ostomy supplies
  • Wheelchair batteries and repairs
  • Medical taxi transportation
  • Eye glasses
  • Adult day programs user fee
  • Personal emergency response
  • Other services and special items
Do I qualify for an Affordable Transit Pass?

The Affordable Transit Pass helps employed City of Hamilton residents living with a low income purchase an adult monthly bus pass for half price.

You must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Live in the City of Hamilton
  • Be currently working in a full time, part time or casual position
  • Be between the ages of 18 to 64 years
  • Receive assistance from Ontario Works, the Ontario Disability Support Program or your family income falls below the Low-Income cut-off
I can't afford to see a Dentist

Dental services are available to those receiving:

  • Ontario Works
  • Ontario Disability Support Program
  • Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities
  • Low income seniors and their families
Helping Hands

Helping Hands provides home support to eligible low income senior citizens and the disabled. Services include house cleaning, rug shampooing, window cleaning, laundry, air conditioner installation, spring and fall yard clean-up, lawn and yard maintenance, snow shoveling and packing.

Funerals, Burials & Cremations

The City of Hamilton provides financial assistance on behalf of deceased Hamilton residents who do not have sufficient funds in their estate to fully cover the cost of a basic funeral, burial and/or cremation.

Ontario Renovates Program for Homeowners

The Homeowner Ontario Renovates offers financial assistance to low-income households who own and occupy substandard housing to enable them to repair their dwellings to a minimum level of health and safety.
