Medical Advisory Salmonella Outbreak – Cantaloupe Products Recalled
The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) is investigating an ongoing outbreak of Salmonella infections in six provinces, including Ontario. Findings to date have identified consumption of Malichita and Rudy brand cantaloupes as the likely source of the outbreak.
Most ill individuals are children 5 years of age or younger, or adults 65 years of age or older. Some cases report residing in long-term care homes and many cases report attending daycare. To date, Hamilton Public Health Services has not received or investigated any confirmed reports of Salmonellosis linked to this recall.
The impacted cantaloupe products, as well as produce items that were processed alongside the cantaloupes, have been recalled by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) who is leading and conducting the food safety investigation. This includes other fruits like honeydew, pineapple, watermelon, and various fruit trays. Information about the recalled products can be found on CFIA’s food recall warning.
Consumers have been directed by the PHAC to follow up with their healthcare provider if they have been exposed to the recalled products or are experiencing any symptoms of Salmonellosis including fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, or abdominal cramps.
