Do not come in contact with the water
Blue green algae blooms can happen in Hamilton Harbour in the summer and are typically seen as bright green surface scums. Blue green algae can make toxins that are harmful if swallowed or come in contact with skin. Exposure can cause headaches, fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, skin rashes and mucous membrane irritation.
- Swimmers are advised to stay out of the water
- Pets and kids are not to drink or play in the water
- Avoid any water sports near the beach that involve touching the water
- Do not eat fish caught from this area
Anyone who’s been in the water lately and is experiencing any of these symptoms is advised to contact a physician.
Hamilton’s drinking water supply is not affected by this situation.
