Stray Dog Adoptions

Animal Services Officers going door to door will be wearing uniforms and carrying City photo ID

Animal Services may be coming to your door!

Animal Services Licensing Officers are going door to door to educate dog owners on their responsibilities to purchase licences for their dogs.

These Officers will be in uniform and carrying City photo identification with them at all times.

Anyone may renew or purchase a licence at their door, online or in person at Hamilton Animal Services, Municipal Law Enforcement or Municipal Service Centre locations

The City of Hamilton does not have a stray dog adoption program.

We make every effort to find a stray dog’s owner. If a dog is not claimed within 72 hours, it is assessed by the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA.

The SPCA offers a stray dog that is not claimed through their adoption program. If the SPCA doesn't wish to claim the dog for their adoption program, then Animal Services will give the animal to a rescue organization to be re-homed based on their:

  • Temperament
  • Behaviour
  • Health

Many of these rescue organizations are non-profit, charitable groups that are primarily run by volunteers. Without these adoption programs, many of the animals that come into Animal Services would not have the opportunity to find the forever homes that they deserve.
