Lost Pets

Recovering a Lost Animal? You need to act quickly if your pet is lost!

1. Look through the found reports

  • Check Helping Lost Pets to view animals who are currently at the Hamilton Animal Services shelter to see if someone has already found your pet. We post information about all found pets.
  • Information is updated four times each day.

2. Create lost reports

  1. Contact Hamilton Animal Services to leave a report: 905-574-3433 ext. 4 from Monday to Friday: 8:30 am to 4:30 pm
  2. Register with Helping Lost Pets to post a report

3. Attend the shelter in person

  • Visit us at 247 Dartnall Rd, Hamilton, ON
  • You will need to bring current identification to look at the animals in the shelter.
  • Be prepared to provide a description of your pet, and any identification that your pet was wearing when it was lost. A good photo is a big help!

You are still responsible for looking for your pet after following these steps.

More tips to recover your lost pet:

  • Put up lost pet posters:
    • in your neighbours’ mailboxes up to three-blocks away from your home
    • up to 10 blocks away from your home
  • If your pet has a microchip, call the microchip company to make sure your address and phone numbers are up to date.
  • Consider posting lost reports on Kijiji, Craigslist, Facebook and local newspapers. You should look at the found reports on these sites too.

Keep your contact info up to date

  • Hamilton Animal Services holds stray animals for a minimum for 5 days and up to 10 days (space permitting) for animals that have identification such as a traceable microchip or a licence.
  • If a pet is wearing an id tag, an animal licence, or has a microchip, Animal Services will attempt to contact the owner.
  • If Animal Services picks up a pet wearing a current animal licence we will drive your pet home.
