THE 2018 `FAMOUS HAMILTONIAN OF THE YEAR’ IS…DOCTOR ELIZABETH BAGSHAW
ELIZABETH BAGSHAW: Ms. Bagshaw was among the first crusaders for birth control rights in Canada. One of Hamilton's most popular doctors, she spent over 70 years in medicine. Despite opposition, Dr. Bagshaw was involved with the opening of Canada's first birth control clinic in 1932, and worked as the clinic's medical director for 30 years. Hamilton's Citizen of the Year in 1970; a Member of the Order of Canada; received the Governor General's Award in Commemoration of the `Persons Case’; inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. Second Place went to Ellen Fairclough, first woman appointed to Federal Cabinet, and Third to Adelaide Hunter Hoodless, who helped found the National Y.W.C.A. and the National Council of Women of Canada.
