Many Municipalities have renamed the August Civic Holiday in recognition of prominent historical figures. Burlington celebrates Joseph Brant Day, Oshawa McLaughlin Day, and Toronto Simcoe Day. In honour of our city’s founder, Hamilton celebrates `George Hamilton Day’
In honour of our city’s founder, Hamilton celebrates `George Hamilton Day’. Each year on George Hamilton Day weekend we celebrate the contribution of a notable historical figure as voted by the citizens of Hamilton. Past notables have included George Hamilton himself, Sara Calder, Lincoln Alexander, Dr. Elizabeth Bagshaw, and Thomas Baker McQuesten.
This year, Hamilton residents voted Janet Lee Famous Hamiltonian 2019, for her role in establishing the first Women’s Institute in the world, right here in Hamilton in 1897. Today, Women’s Institutes exist in more than 70 countries. The City is partnering with the Federated Women’s Institute of Ontario, the Bruce Trail Conservancy, Footsteps in Time and the Art Gallery of Hamilton to present community events for all ages in celebration of Janet, George and the city he founded.
