This measures the length of time that staff take to review an application and make an eligibility decision. The length of time it takes to assess initial eligibility has a direct impact on citizens’ livelihood.
Story behind the numbers
Residents apply for Ontario Works when in difficult financial circumstances. The longer the assessment period, the more time a family is without funds for basic needs and shelter. This increases risk of homelessness. The provincially recommended target from application to the first financial assistance is four days.
Hamilton is streamlining the application process to reduce the time from application to eligibility decision and first granting of financial assistance. Changes began in early 2018 and additional improvements are planned for later 2018 and 2019.
