Smart Cities Challenge

Join the challenge

Municipal Governments around the world are focusing on using technology to improve quality of life for residents, enable sustainability, better deliver services and improve effectiveness. ‎This includes enabling more online services and direct two way communication between the community and their government; and using technology to improve the services themselves, such as using sensors to monitor performance real-time and using the data to make decisions.

Infrastructure Canada has launched a $50 million Smart Cities Challenge program and the City of Hamilton is participating. The Smart Cities Challenge is a pan-Canadian competition open to communities of all sizes, including municipalities, regional governments and Indigenous communities (First Nations, Métis and Inuit). The Challenge encourages communities to adopt a smart cities approach to improve the lives of their residents through innovation, data and connected technology.

We want you to join the challenge. Think big. And we want your input into Hamilton’s plan using a smart city approach.

What is a smart cities approach?

A smart cities approach aims to achieve meaningful outcomes for residents by leveraging the fundamental benefits that data and connected technology have to offer:

When communities make their data truly accessible, usable and barrier-free, their decision-making processes become transparent, empowering citizens and strengthening the relationship between residents and public organizations.

Data and connected technology empower communities to break down silos that exist within local governments and public organizations.

When tools and technological approaches are open-source, transparent and standardized, they can be used by communities across the country, no matter their size or capacity.

Connected technology enables communities to bring traditional and non-traditional partners together to collaborate.

As the City is developing its Smart City Strategy and Roadmap we've been reaching out to our community partners to get the conversation going. We have also reviewed what residents and the community have already told us through the Our Future Hamilton engagement so we don't lose sight of what we’ve already heard from the community.

What should our focus be? What should our challenge be? And what's words would you include? We want to hear from you, tell us what you think - what should the City focus on from a Smart City Perspective‎?
