Mohawk Road (McNiven Road to Hwy 403) EA

Notice of Project Completion & Public Review Period

The City of Hamilton has completed a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) to address transportation issues along Mohawk Road (McNiven Road to Highway 403).  The road improvements have been planned as a Schedule C Project under Municipal Engineers Association Class Environmental Assessment (EA), (October 2000, as amended 2007, 2011 and 2015). Phases 3 and 4 of the process have been completed.

The recommended alternative is Design Option 4A – a three lane cross-section (one through lane in each direction and a two-way-left-turn lane) with a multi-use path on the north side of the road. There will also be a sidewalk installed on the southside of Mohawk Road between McNiven Road and Algonquin Avenue. This option provides the best balance of improving active transportation facilities along Mohawk Road and minimizing impacts to mature trees.

Public review for comments

This notice places the Mohawk Road Municipal Class Environmental Assessment on public record for a 30-day comment period to complete the requirements of the Municipal Class EA process. Comments must be received by January 15, 2020 to become part of the public record for this study.

If concerns arise regarding this project, which cannot be resolved in discussion with the City, a person or party may request that the Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks make a Part II Order (appeal). A standardized form is to be used by anyone who believes that the environmental assessment process was incomplete, incorrect in that it failed to follow the required process. The required form can be found on the Forms Repository website by searching “Part II Order” or “012-2206E (the form ID number). Once completed, the form is then to be sent to both the Minister and Director of the Environmental Assessment and Permissions Branch:

If there is no request received by January 15, 2020, Mohawk Road will proceed to design and construction as presented in the planning documentation.

The City of Hamilton initiated the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment process to develop and assess design alternatives that address transportation issues along Mohawk Road from McNiven Road to Highway 403.

The Ancaster Transportation Master Plan (ATMP) reviewed transportation issues in Ancaster. The ATMP identified Mohawk Road as a Schedule C (Phases 3 & 4) project  with the need for road widening improvements – three lanes with two-way left turn lane (TWLTL). This stretch of road is a two-lane road with urban and rural cross sections. Sidewalks exist sporadically along the road.
