Five Days to Emergency Preparedness

The City of Hamilton is marking Canada’s annual Emergency Preparedness week with our “Five Days to Emergency Preparedness” awareness campaign. By taking a few simple steps today, you can become better prepared to face a range of emergencies. Help yourself and your family get informed and get ready with these tips:

Monday: Make a plan

  • Learn what disasters can happen in your area
  • Identify meeting places  
  • Make a family communication plan
  • Make a plan for your pets

Emergency supply kit: First aid kit, batteries, flashlight, bottled water, radio, lantern
Tuesday: Get emergency supplies

  • Gather supplies in an accessible place
  • Purchase and store a 72 hour supply of water
  • Buy a 3 day supply of food for your household

Wednesday: Prepare for unique needs

  • Talk with family to identify unique needs
  • Consider those with disabilities

Thursday: Be informed, Sign up for alerts

  • Learn about the Province of Ontario’s Public Alerting system and sign up to receive alerts
  • Know where to get local emergency information through radio, television, and the internet
