What is yard waste?

Yard waste includes many natural things that decompose or break down to become a nutrient rich soil called "humus" or compost. The City of Hamilton picks up yard waste so that it can be composted.

You can put out an unlimited amount of yard waste on your pick up day every week. Large loads of yard waste can be taken to a Community Recycling Centre. There are some guidelines to help you prepare your leaf and yard waste such as:

  • Use paper bags or empty open top rigid containers identified with a leaf & yard waste sticker (such as an empty garbage bin without a lid)
  • Leaf and yard waste paper bags should be rolled up at the top when placing out for collection
  • Ensure each bag or container of yard waste weighs no more than 50 lbs
  • Bundle branches and twigs together. There should not be any branches sticking out of bags
Not sure where to put that tree branch or those leaves that you just raked up?
