What is yard waste?

Yard waste includes many natural things that decompose or break down to become a nutrient rich soil called "humus" or compost. The City of Hamilton picks up yard waste so that it can be composted.

You can put out an unlimited amount of yard waste on your pick up day every week. Large loads of yard waste can be taken to a Community Recycling Centre. There are some guidelines to help you prepare your leaf and yard waste such as:

  • Use paper bags, not plastic bags
  • Keep each bag of yard waste less than 50 pounds
  • Bundle branches and twigs
Not sure where to put that tree branch or those leaves that you just raked up?
  • Download the City's free waste app
  • Find out your collection day
  • Search waste coach for any waste item

What is grasscycling?

The natural recycling of grass is called "grasscycling". Grasscycling means leaving grass clippings on your lawn after you have finished mowing it. All grass cut with any type of lawn mowers can be used to grasscycle.
