Building owners fined $13,200 for Fire Code Contraventions

HAMILTON, ON –  The owners of a two storey lodging house located at 35 Collier Crescent were convicted of six violations of the Ontario Fire Code and one count of failure to comply with an Inspection Order made under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act.

In Provincial Offences Court on September 25, 2019, the owners were fined a total of $13,200.

The violations included failing to provide:

  • a secondary exit
  • proper fire separations
  • exit signs

These life safety features are vital to early detection and warning, fire containment and exiting to allow building occupants adequate time to quickly and safely exit the premises.

“Building owners must take responsibility to ensure their buildings are in compliance with the Ontario Fire Code and the Fire Protection & Prevention Act. Failure to do so will result in prosecution” states Chief Fire Prevention Officer Peter DeBoer with the Hamilton Fire Department.

Building owners or occupants who have any questions or concerns regarding fire safety are encouraged to contact the Fire Prevention Division of the Hamilton Fire Department at 905 546-2424 ext. 1380, weekdays between the hours of 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
