Interested in contributing to your community by sharing your time and expertise with the Recreation Division? 

Recreation Centres across Hamilton have a variety of diverse programs including gym, swim, and arts for all ages. All applications are accepted, although matching every volunteer may not be possible.

Volunteer roles


Volunteer Event Support or Facility Setup

Applications are accepted all year, and will be accommodated based on operational need. 

Job summary: 

Under the supervision of a Recreation staff, the Volunteer Event Support or Facility Setup is responsible for cleaning/ organizing program areas, preparing supplies and program materials, preparing program crafts, set up and take down of program areas and other duties as related.

Volunteer Greeter

Applications are accepted all year, and will be accommodated based on operational need.

Job summary: 

Under the supervision of a Recreation staff, the Volunteer Greeter is responsible for assisting with general patron inquiries, showing patrons to their program rooms, welcome patrons into the building and information sharing on upcoming program and services and other duties as related.

  • Good communication skills and an ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Good customer service skills

Volunteer Program Support

Applications are accepted all year. Programs are run on a sessional basis (fall, winter, spring and summer), and will be accommodated based on operational need.

Job summary:

Under the supervision of a Recreation staff, the Volunteer Program Support is responsible for providing program assistance to staff working in recreation programs and support activities for patrons (i.e. games, crafts, songs, sports, fitness, and aquatics).

Qualifications & requirements:

  • Enthusiastic, engaged and respectful
  • Good communication skills and an ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Good customer service skills and have the ability to work with varied age groups
  • Program facilitation skills:
    • Gym/Club/Fitness Program Support: crafts, dance, sports skills
    • Aquatics: Bronze Medallion, Swim Club

Assets:

  • High Five ex. Principles of Healthy Childhood Development (PHCD)
  • Standard First Aid with CPR-C
  • National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Training 

A volunteer applicant is responsible to:

  • Complete the application form
  • Ensure all  requirements can be met (including a Criminal Record and Judicial Search)
  • Submit with sufficient time for Recreation staff to process (minimum 1 month)
  • Participate in training 
  • Have availability which match a facility’s volunteer need 
  • Meet new people and have fun
  • Spend time getting active
  • Help out doing activities you enjoy
  • Fulfil your volunteer hours component for school
  • Gain experience and new skills
  • Learn from trained recreation staff
