The Hamilton Firefighters Association (HFA) approached the City indicating their wish to create a ceremonial gathering space with a central pedestal focal point to house a commemorative sculpture. The plaza shall depict a space which conceptually represents the traditional Firefighter’s crest.
A motion was approved by City Council on January 25, 2017, with directions for staff to investigate potential sites on existing City lands to be used for the Fallen Firefighter Memorial. Site criteria include ceremonial space that could accommodate a ladder fire truck in close proximity to the memorial site.
The HFA met with staff and presented several images of their vision for consideration. The primary function of this space is for commemoration, reflection and ceremonial. Design elements include a center feature (single sculpture piece) on a pedestal, paved surface (plaza) with words “Honour”, “Commitment”, “Sacrifice”, “Dedication”; lighting for the center feature and commemorative wall (for names, identifications and dates); three flag poles; seating; and four feature flower beds (with irrigation) hugging the space. The design of the space must consider connection to existing paths, trails and sidewalks for accessibility.
During the annual commemoration ceremonies, some preliminary event programming may include one/two fire truck(s) in proximity to the space, a pipe-band of some sort, portable spectator seating in the form of stackable chairs, allowance for public address system power source.
