Improving our Parks

Andrew Warburton Memorial Park

Andrew Warburton Memorial Park is a 1.0 hectare (2.5 acre) neighbourhood park located at the intersection of Britannia Avenue and Tragina Avenue North in ward 4. The park is surrounded primarily by single-detached residential housing. Many of the park’s amenities are nearing the end of their life cycle and need to be replaced.

The scope of work for the Andrew Warburton Memorial Park reconstruction is summarized as follows:

  • Replace the existing spray pad and wading pool with similar upgraded amenities.
  • Replace the existing basketball court with a new multi-use court.
  • Move existing play equipment and install new rubber protective safety surfacing at new playground location.
  • Realign and re-surface park pathways to create a logical accessible network connecting the neighbourhood to the park amenities and strengthen the Pipeline Trail connection.
  • Add an accessible HSR transit stop at Cope St.
  • Replace all wood retaining walls with either armour-stone or berm grading. This includes rebuilding the community garden area.
  • Replace wood fences with steel fences.
  • Resurface the existing parking lot.
  • Improve lighting - Pipeline Trail pathway, playground areas, building and parking lot.
  • New tree planting for shade and/or succession planting.

Construction Update

Renovation of the Andrew Warburton Memorial Park is almost complete. The west part of the park, including the playground, was re-opened to the public in December.

The east part of the park is still an active construction site and will be closed over the winter months – this area is outlined in red on the attached drawing. The tasks that remain to be completed include:

  • Replace curb, sidewalk and median strip at the corner of Allan Ave & Cope St.
  • Build concrete seat walls near the wading pool.
  • Install a concrete bus stop pad on Britannia Ave.
  • Paint lines on the new parking lot and multi-use court.
  • Pour wading pool concrete.
  • Test spray pad, wading pool and drinking fountain operation.
  • Install sod in the Cope St median and some areas remaining to be finished around pathways in the park.

We anticipate the entire park will be open to the public by the end of May 2022 (weather dependent).

This project is partially funded by the ICIP COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Stream. This funding program was recently extended; the project must be substantially completed on or before December 31, 2023 (previously all work had to be complete by December 31, 2021).
