William Connell Park is a 20 hectare (49 acre) city-wide park located on West 5th Street between Stone Church Road West and Rymal Road West. City-wide parks are intended to appeal to those with widely varying needs and interests, and service residents and visitors from Hamilton and surrounding areas.
Due to its large size, the park is being built in phases. At this time, the park includes two creative play structures, spray pad, sun shelter, tennis courts, a multi-use court, walking pathways, a lit football field, a lit senior soccer field, a storm water management facility, an internal road way system and parking. A field house with change rooms and storage is currently under construction.
- Tender award and removals to start
The next phase of work will begin winter 2019 and will include:
- New asphalt within the tennis court area, the multi-use court, a portion of the east parking lot and around the storm water pond walking loop
- New concrete for the spray pad and under the existing pavilion
- Storm pond works including new cable concrete mats and sediment removal
Work is expected to be complete by the summer of 2020, weather dependent. Residents will still have access to facilities not under construction.
Please note that there is no winter maintenance on the park pathways. This is a city-wide standard that applies to all park pathways that are not located along identified commuter routes.
The loop pathway around the storm pond has been experiencing wash out during wet conditions. This problem will be addressed through the current phase of construction in Spring 2020. If necessary, portions of the pathway may be closed for winter and signage will be installed ahead of time to notify users.
