Municipal Tennis & Pickelball Courts reopen!

As of Friday, May 22, municipal outdoor tennis courts and municipal pickleball courts in Hamilton have reopened. All users must continue to maintain two metres of physical distance from other users and should remember to practice good hand hygiene.

Tennis Club Re-Opening Guidelines

These guidelines are meant to provide a basic outline for organizations that operate tennis clubs on behalf of the City of Hamilton to follow in crafting their own protocols.

Mandatory Actions

Physical / social distancing

  • Players, volunteers, and staff must be 2 metres apart at all times, including while performing season opening cleaning and setup, waiting for court time, court changeovers, and celebrations (e.g., no high fives or hand shakes);
  • A maximum of five people per court will be allowed (e.g., 2 players per side and one coach);
  • Doubles players must reside in the same household;
  • Provide a buffer between scheduled court times to prevent congregating and allow for cleaning of high touch surfaces;
  • Cancel events such as tournaments or lessons if unable to ensure appropriate physical distancing and equipment handling; and
  • Remove all tables and chairs from common areas to discourage congregating.

Access

  • Players, staff, and volunteers must not visit the club if they:
    • Are exhibiting flu-like symptoms or any known COVID-19 symptoms (e.g., fever, cough, difficulty breathing, etc.);
    • Have been in contact with someone with COVID-19 and/or flu-like symptoms in the previous 14 days;
    • Have been outside of Canada in the previous 14 days; and/or
    • Are considered vulnerable or at risk (e.g., elderly individuals or those suffering from a chronic medical condition).
  • If an individual has symptoms of COVID-19, they should be told to self-isolate at home, encouraged to complete Ontario’s self-assessment tool and to call their primary care provider or Telehealth Ontario (1-866-797-0000) or Public Health Services (905-974-9848) for an assessment; and
  • Public health will provide advice regarding any other measures that the tennis club or setting may need to take to reduce the risk of transmission

 Cleanliness and Hygiene

  • Have a plan for sanitizing all high touch surface areas at the start and end of each day, as well as between matches on all courts;
  • Make readily available hand sanitizer to encourage hand hygiene;
  • Forbid sharing of personal items (e.g., racquets, towels, etc.)., except amongst household members; and
  • Clubhouse washrooms may be opened if the organization:
    • Can ensure sufficient physical distancing (e.g., one person at a time, space to pass when entering and exiting, etc.); and
    • Has a plan in place for ongoing enhanced cleaning after each use.

Communication

  • All members must be contacted before re-opening re: guidelines and if any new guidelines are introduced.

Record Keeping

  • A record of ALL visitors (including staff, volunteers, and players) must be kept (preferably using an online tool) to assist Public Health in the investigation of a positive case of COVID-19.
