Postpartum Depression & Anxiety

Having a baby is expected to be a happy and exciting time, but many women will experience depression during or after pregnancy.  It is a common complication of childbirth.

Signs of depression

Postpartum depression is when a woman has symptoms of depression lasting more than two weeks anytime in the first year after the birth of her baby.  Signs of depression may include some or all of the following:

  • Feeling sad, worthless, hopeless, guilty or anxious a lot of the time
  • Feeling irritable or angry
  • Losing interest in activities or people
  • Finding it hard to focus on tasks, remember information or make decisions
  • Changes in eating and sleeping
  • Health problems

Signs of anxiety

It is common for women with postpartum depression to have anxiety, but you can have anxiety without depression.   You may have anxiety about your baby’s health or about your ability as a mother.  Signs of anxiety may include:

  • Constant worry
  • Feeling that something bad is going to happen
  • Changes in eating and sleeping
  • Unable to sit still
  • Physical symptoms such as dizziness

  • Ask for help
  • Talk to your doctor or nurse
  • Talk about your feelings
  • Take care of yourself
