Smoke-Free School Property

On May 31, 2006 the Smoke-Free Ontario Act:

  • Requires school property in Ontario be smoke-free
  • Requires signs in the locations affected by this law

School board protocol for smoking on school property

Two of the school boards in Hamilton have protocol for smoking on school property.

Enforcement

Tobacco enforcement officers routinely inspect school property and investigate complaints.  A ticket and fine are given to people or places that do not obey the law. Fines start at $250.

Report smoking on school property

If you have questions about the law or you want to report smoking on school property:

You should include the following in your report:

  • Your name and phone number
  • The date and time of the incident
  • Description of what occurred
  • Name and address of school where smoking occurred, if possible
