Safety Tips for Commuting

As we being to return to the office, Smart Commute would like to offer some tips to commute safely.


Transit agencies have increased cleaning, introduced additional safety measures and made operational changes to adhere to public health guidelines.

Safety tips for using transit:

  • Follow physical distancing protocols on busses, at bus stops and in terminals.
  • Travel during off-peak hours to avoid crowds of people.
  • Continue to use hand rails to prevent falling, but be sure to use hand sanitizer, avoid touching your face and wash your hands as soon as possible.
  • Check transit routes and schedules ahead of time to keep informed about any changes.


Carpooling can make it difficult to maintain physical distancing, but there are measures that can help reduce your risks if carpooling is your only option.

Safety tips for carpooling:

  • Limit the number of carpoolers sharing a vehicle if possible and have the passenger sit in the back seat.
  • Everyone should wear a mask.
  • Improve air circulation in the vehicle by opening the windows and using the air vents.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces like the steering wheel, seatbelts, door handles, the radio, and other areas of the vehicle.
  • Use cashless payments if possible.


Teleworking is a great way to reduce the risks associated with COVID-19. That being said, stress and isolation can become more prominent while teleworking.

Safety tips for teleworking:

  • Clarify work expectations and reach out to your manager as needed to avoid conflict and unncessessary stress.
  • Set up a dedicated work space with natural light and minimal distractions.
  • Ensure co-workers know how to reach you during core office hours.
  • Report any injuries or sicknesses as if working at the physical workplace location.
  • Stay connected with colleagues through virtual means to avoid feeling isolated.

Cycling and Walking

Cycling and walking are excellent ways to avoid crowds and maintain physical distancing. They also present fewer safety risks compared to other modes.

Safety tips for cycling & walking:

  • Do not walk or ride in groups, with the exception of your immediate household members/ or ‘bubble’
  • Consider wearing a face mask for situations where you are unable to maintain physical distancing.
