Woodlands Park Makeover Announcement
Hamilton, ON - August 11, 2016 - City of Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger and Councillor Matthew Green joined partners from CN and Tree Canada today to announce funding for a makeover at Woodlands Park, as part of CN EcoConnexions.
The project will clean up an old alley and create a new literacy trail extension in Woodlands Park, at 501 Barton Street East. The trail will have large shade trees, gardens and pollinator patches. Reading pods will encourage children and families to sit and enjoy a book under a tree or surrounded by vegetation. There will also be solar powered lighting and a technology charging station.
"We're enhancing this community through beautification and bringing literacy resources that are so vital in helping to achieve our goal of poverty reduction," said Mayor Fred Eisenberger. "Fostering a love of reading helps set a path for growth and development for our youth."
CN EcoConnexions donated $25,000 to the park makeover, and Councillor Matthew Green matched the donation.
“Living together and learning together go hand in hand,” says Councillor Matthew Green. “I am proud to match CN’s donation by contributing an additional $25,000 for this project from area rating. I’d like to congratulate our City staff, Tree Canada, and CN. Their dedication and donation will help kids learn, laugh, and grow.”
Students in the Rotary Club of Hamilton’s Rotary Literacy Program also attended today’s event. Coordinators for the literacy program hope that some of the camp’s programming will be able to take advantage of the new literacy trail at Woodlands Park next summer.
The City of Hamilton thanks CN EcoConnexions, Tree Canada and other partners for their support in improving this Hamilton Park.
