Building Near Metrolinx – Guidelines and Permits
Enabling Works Phase Underway
The "Enabling Works" phase, also known as "early works," includes essential underground projects being completed before major LRT construction begins. These targeted projects take place in or near sections of the LRT corridor and are designed to prepare the way for the main construction phase. By completing this work early, we can reduce time and complexities for the LRT contractor when major construction starts.
Funded by Metrolinx, some of these projects are being delivered through City of Hamilton contracts. The City has coordinated these enabling works with planned capital improvements to City infrastructure, ensuring cost-effective delivery for both Metrolinx and the City while minimizing construction disruption for the community.
Continued City enabling projects for LRT in the 2026 construction season include:
- Lowering a 1200mm trunk watermain on Nash Road under the future guideway at the Queenston Road intersection
- Relocating a 1200mm trunk watermain from Queenston Road to a new alignment on Rosewood Road and Main Street East
- Main Street and Ottawa Street: multiple trunk watermains on Main Street East from Grosvenor Avenue to London Street
City enabling projects already completed include:
- A 300mm watermain on Sherman Avenue from Cumberland Avenue to Wilson Street
- A 500mm trunk watermain on Wentworth Street from King Street to Wilson Street
Upcoming Hamilton LRT Works - Utility Inspection
Duration: Aug 31, 2026 to Dec 31, 2026
Working Hours: Monday to Sunday, 7 am to 7 pm
Where: Along the future Hamilton LRT Route
As part of the detailed design phase of the Hamilton LRT, additional field investigations are required. Over the coming months, the team will investigate locations along the LRT alignment to validate existing information and collect additional data needed to support project design and construction planning.
What to Expect
- Increased presence of construction vehicles and equipment can be expected in the work area.
- Work areas will be clearly marked or fenced off to ensure public safety.

Traffic Changes
- Minor delays may be experienced near the work zone.
- All businesses in the area will remain open during the work. Please follow signage for access.
Pedestrian Access
- Pedestrian detours may be required, with signs in place to direct pedestrians as needed.
Transit
- Some HSR bus stops will be closed for periods of time during the work. Signs will be posted to keep residents informed.
