Each year the Hamilton Municipal Heritage Committee presents the HMHC Heritage Recognition Awards. Founded in 2007, these awards celebrate the significant contributions of property owners, educators, developers and volunteers in the conservation of Hamilton’s heritage.
The Hamilton Municipal Heritage Committee makes a formal presentation to the award winners at their annual Heritage Recognition Awards Celebration in June.
Nominations can be submitted by citizens or by property owners.
HMHC Heritage Recognition Awards
As a city, we want to congratulate award recipients, and celebrate the significant contributions of property owners, educators, developers and volunteers in the conservation of Hamilton’s heritage.

Multiple award recipients will be recognized across these 2025 award categories:
58 Wellington Street South, Hamilton
Built circa 1860, this is a well-preserved example of an Italianate home. It retains original windows, front door, covered porch and many more original features.
Heritage Status: Registered
207, 209, 211 Caroline Street South, Hamilton
Built circa 1887 by James Jobson, the Victorian brick rowhouses are known as the ‘Caroline Row’. The rowhouses are unified by a continuous verandah, bay windows, and contrasting brick and stone lintels.

130 Victoria Avenue North, Hamilton
This Romanesque Revival red brick church began life as Victoria Avenue Baptist Church with cornerstone laid June 1893. Today it is home to the Eucharist Church.

161 Emerald Street North, Hamilton
A unique Edwardian with Italianate elements, this well-cared-for home built by William Wark circa 1888 retains many original features. A true gem and landmark on Emerald Street North.

182 Market Street, Hamilton
Built circa 1872, this beautifully maintained home is one of six in the Italianate-influenced row house. The owner has restored the transom window, front windows and installed period-correct wooden storms.

239 Park Street North, Hamilton
Built circa 1919, this property has been lovingly maintained by its owners and retains original features, such as the detailed covered porch.

812 King Street East, Hamilton
Built circa 1910, this unique concrete block former home retains a large covered porch and has been thoughtfully restored to today’s grandeur after a substantial fire in 2012

1651 King Street East, Hamilton
Built circa 1840, this property is a rare surviving example of an early farmhouse. It retains many wood features like bargeboard and the covered porch. The property remained in the Crosswaite family possession until 1987

Built circa 1887, this Georgian Revival home has seen extensive restorations by the current owners of the outstanding original heritage features.

To be eligible, these criteria must be met:
- Properties must be located in the City of Hamilton.
- Properties must be considered to have cultural heritage value or interest, but are not required to be listed on the Inventory, on the Municipal Heritage Register or designated under the Ontario Heritage Act.
- All property uses are eligible (residential, commercial, institutional, private, public, etc.)
- When applicable, a renting or leasing tenant of a heritage property and / or a project team is also eligible or can be named as a co-recipient along with the property owner. The Hamilton Municipal Heritage Committee tries to recognize all known parties related to the property’s successful conservation.
- Active members of the Hamilton Municipal Heritage Committee and all related committees and working groups are not eligible for award nomination, including the Heritage Permit Review Subcommittee, the Cross-Melville Heritage Conservation District Advisory Committee, the Inventory and Research Working Group, the Education Work Group and the Policy and Design Working Group.
There are the award categories for the HMHC Heritage Recognition Awards. Not all award categories presented annually, and are subject to change.
Heritage Property Conservation Award
Presented to property owners who have demonstrated an outstanding contribution to the conservation, restoration and preservation of Hamilton’s built heritage.
Heritage Property Developer Recognition Award
Presented to heritage property developers who have demonstrated an outstanding contribution to the conservation, restoration and preservation of Hamilton’s built heritage.
Adaptive Reuse of a Heritage Property Award
Presented to property owners who have demonstrated an outstanding contribution to the conservation, restoration and preservation of Hamilton's built heritage through adaptive reuse.
Cultural Heritage Landscape Award
Recognizing the efforts of an individual or team who has demonstrated an outstanding contribution to the conservation of Hamilton’s cultural heritage landscapes.
Sustainable Design in Heritage Award
Presented to property owners who have demonstrated an outstanding contribution to the conservation Hamilton’s built heritage in a sustainable manner, including the introduction of energy conservation measures.
Making Heritage Accessible Award
Presented to heritage property owners who have demonstrated an outstanding contribution to the conservation of Hamilton’s heritage by making an inaccessible property accessible to all citizens of Hamilton.
Education in Heritage Award
Recognizing the efforts of local historians and educators who have played a significant role in educating people on the conservation of Hamilton’s tangible and intangible heritage.
The Art of Heritage Recognition Award
Recognizing the efforts of local artists who have played a significant role in educating people on the conservation of Hamilton’s tangible and intangible heritage.
Heritage Group, Society or Specialty Team Award
Recognizing the efforts of a heritage group, society or specialty team who has demonstrated an outstanding contribution to the conservation of Hamilton’s heritage.
Heritage Streetscape Revitalization Award
Recognizing the efforts of a property owner who has demonstrated an outstanding contribution to the enhancement of Hamilton’s heritage streetscape through conservation and revitalization.
Specialized Heritage Craft and Trade
Excellence in a heritage trade, recognizing the use of construction techniques and materials that are compatible to the building’s original architectural qualities; demonstrating a high level of craftsmanship.
