Hamilton Waterfront Trust Transition
Update on the Hamilton Waterfront Trust
The City of Hamilton and the Hamilton Waterfront Trust are working together to wind down the Trust and transfer its existing programs and services to the City.
The Hamilton Waterfront Trust (HWT) was established in 2000 as a separate organization and legal entity from the City. Since then, it has played a key role in investing in and improving public access to the waterfront and enhancing the area for the enjoyment of residents and visitors.
Why is the Trust’s work being transferred to The City?
The Hamilton Waterfront Trust was initially set up to support land development and improvement projects related to Hamilton’s West Harbour. Now that the funds have been invested and these major projects are complete, both the City and the Trust agree it makes sense to bring the remaining services and operations under the City’s oversight.
Will the HWT services and programs stay the same?
Yes. The City is working closely with the Hamilton Waterfront Trust to ensure a seamless transition of services and programming. The goal is to continue offering the same great experiences and activities that connect community members and visitors with Hamilton’s waterfront.
This includes the Outdoor rink, harbour tours, waterfront trolley, as well as music and entertainment events - all of which are part of the transition plan.
When will the transition happen?
The transition will take place through 2025 and early 2026.
