Restoration Update
The City of Hamilton is pleased to provide an update on the ongoing restoration of Griffin House National Historic Site - a culturally and historically significant Black heritage site that continues to stand as a powerful symbol of freedom, prosperity, and resilience in Canada.
This project is being carried out in multiple phases to ensure both the structural preservation and long-term accessibility of the site.
Phase One – Completed 2024
- Complete rebuilding of the original stone foundation
- Introduction of modern waterproofing and water-management systems
These foundational upgrades were critical in protecting the building from moisture damage and ensuring long-term structural stability.
Phase Two – Underway (July 2025 to Fall 2025)
- Restoration of the historic wood cladding
- Replacement of the cedar shingle roof
- Structural repairs to key timber beams
- Construction of a new front stoop and rear accessible ramp
- Regrading of pathways to improve accessibility throughout the site
These efforts are designed to enhance the safety, functionality, and heritage character of Griffin House, while improving the visitor experience for all.
Phase Three – Coming Soon
- Interior conservation
- HVAC upgrades for climate control
- Lighting improvements to support programming and interpretation
