A person who wishes to run as a candidate for Council or School Board in the 2026 Municipal Election must file a nomination package with the Office of the City Clerk from May 1 to August 21, 2026 at 2 pm. A person cannot raise or spend money on an election campaign until they have filed a nomination package.
As you prepare to be a candidate in the 2026 Municipal Election, it is your responsibility, through your own determination or with the assistance of a lawyer and/or a financial professional, to ensure that the legal and financial requirements related to your candidacy have been met. It is critical that each candidate read and is familiar with the Municipal Elections Act, 1996.
How to Submit a Nomination Package
Nomination packages must include these completed forms:
- Nomination Form - Form 1 - English | Form 1 - French
- Endorsement of Nomination - Form 2 - English | Form 2 - French
- Declaration of Qualification - Council
- Declaration of Qualification - School Board - English | School Board - French
- Release of Candidate Information Consent Form - English | Consent Form - French
- Candidate Request & Oath for Proper Use of the Voter's List - English | Oath - French
- Ballot Name & Name Pronunciation Form | Pronunciation - French
- Acknowledgement of Receipt
Nominations must be filed in person at the Office of the City Clerk, City Hall, as original signatures are required.
- Completed nomination papers
- At least 25 declaration of endorsements (mayor and councillor candidates only)
- Current acceptable identification
- Nomination filing fee –the filing fee is $200 for candidates running for mayor and $100 for councillor or school board trustee candidates
- nomination fees are refunded to candidates once they file the required financial statement
- payments may be made by Cash, Debit, certified cheque or money order
Appointments must be made with the Office of the City Clerk to file nominations.
- Appointments will be available weekdays from May 2 to August 20, 2026 between the hours of 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

- Candidates who wish to file a nomination on Nomination day (August 21, 2026) do not require an appointment. Nomination packages will be accepted at City Hall from 9 am to 2 pm. Packages from candidates who arrive after 2 pm on Nomination day will not be accepted.

If you no longer wish to run in a municipal election, you must file a Withdrawal of Nomination Form in-person before the end of the nomination period. Candidates cannot withdraw after the nomination period has closed.
Candidates who have withdrawn their nomination are still required to file a financial statement.

Offices & Criteria
These offices will be contested for the 2026 Municipal Election:
- Mayor One (1) to be elected by general vote
- Councillors One (1) to be elected for each of the 15 Wards
School Board Trustees - Distribution is To Be Determined.
A person is eligible to be nominated for office on a municipal council (mayor or councillor) if, on the day the nomination paper is filed, they:
- are a Canadian citizen; Reference: 17(2)(b) MEA
- are at least 18 years old; Reference: 17(2)(c) MEA
- Reside in, or are the owner or tenant of land in the City of Hamilton, or the spouse of such owner or tenant; Reference: 17(2)(a) MEA
- are not prohibited from voting under subsection 17(3) of the MEA or otherwise by law; Reference: 17(2)(d)(3), 29(1) MEA, 256 Municipal Act
- are not disqualified by any legislation from holding municipal office. Reference: 256 Municipal Act
These people are disqualified from being elected as a member of council, or from holding office as a member of council:
- an employee of the City of Hamilton, except if they take an unpaid leave of absence as permitted by section 30 of the MEA beginning as of the day they are nominated and ending on Voting Day; Reference: 258(1) Municipal Act
- a person who is the clerk, treasurer, Integrity Commissioner, Auditor General, Ombudsman or register (s 223.11 of the Municipal Act) or an investigator (s 239.2(1) of the Municipal Act), except if on unpaid leave of absence as permitted by section 30 of the MEA; Reference: 258(1) Municipal Act
- a person who holds any administrative position of the municipality, except if on unpaid leave of absence as permitted by section 30 of the MEA; Reference: 258(1) Municipal Act
- a judge of any court; Reference: 258(1) Municipal Act
- a member of the Assembly as provided in Legislative Assembly Act, Senate or House of Commons of Canada who has not resigned from their office by close of nominations; Reference: 258(1) Municipal Act, 29(1.1) MEA
- a public servant within the meaning of the Public Service of Ontario Act, except in accordance with Part V of the Public Services of Ontario Act; Reference: 258(1) Municipal Act
- a Candidate who failed to file the necessary financial statement or exceeded the prescribed spending limit in the last municipal election or by-election; Reference: 88.23(1)(2) Municipal Elections Act
- a person who was convicted of a corrupt practice. Reference: 17(3) MEA
A person is eligible to be nominated for an office on a school board if, on the day the nomination paper is filed, they:
- are a resident within the area of jurisdiction of the board, the owner or tenant of residential property in the area of jurisdiction of the board, or a spouse or such owner or tenant; Reference: 1(8)(9)(10)(a) Education Act
- are a Canadian citizen; Reference: 1(10)(b) Education Act
- are at least 18 years old; Reference: 1(10)(c) Education Act
- meet any other qualifications to vote for the school board (for example, being a Roman Catholic, or holding French language rights; Reference: 50.1, 54, 58.8, 58.9, 219 Education Act
- are not legally prohibited from voting pursuant to section 17(2)(d) of the MEA or otherwise by law; Reference: 17(2)(d) (3) MEA, 1(10)(d) Education Act;
- are not disqualified by any legislation from holding school board office. Reference: 219(4) Education Act
These people are disqualified from being elected for office on a school board:
- an employee of a district school board or school authority, except if they take an unpaid leave of absence beginning as of the day they are nominated and ending on Voting Day; Reference: 219 (4)(a) (5) Education Act
- the clerk or treasurer or deputy clerk or deputy treasurer of a municipality or an upper-tier municipality, all or part of which is included in the area of jurisdiction of the district school board or the school authority, except if they take an unpaid leave of absence beginning as of the day they are nominated and ending on Voting Day; Reference: 219(4)(c) (5) Education Act
- a member of the Assembly or of the Senate or House of Commons of Canada who has not resigned from their office by close of nominations; or Reference: 219(4)(d) Education Act
- otherwise ineligible or disqualified under the Education Act or any other Act. Reference: 219(4)(e) Education Act
Information Session & FAQs
In accordance with subsection 88.23 of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, these individuals are ineligible to be elected or appointed to any office to which the MEA applies until the next regular election has taken place. Notice of default was provided through registered mail.
