Investing in a safer, more connected Hamilton

Hamilton is making coordinated, long-term investments in its transportation network to support a growing city.

The Main Street corridor renewal and redesign project is part of a broader program of infrastructure work across the lower city. Together, these investments are improving safety, strengthening mobility and modernizing how people move through key corridors.

Planning and design for the corridor have also been informed by feedback from residents, businesses and stakeholders through public engagement and consultation.

This reflects a long-term approach to renewing critical infrastructure to support residents, businesses and visitors.

A coordinated city-building approach

Across Hamilton, transportation upgrades are underway as part of a broader effort to renew aging infrastructure and improve how the city functions over time.

Main Street is part of this system-wide approach. It replaces infrastructure that has reached the end of its life, improves safety and supports more reliable movement along a key corridor.

These investments are planned together to improve how people and goods move through the city, rather than delivered as isolated projects.

Why Main Street

Main Street is a key east–west corridor that connects neighbourhoods, businesses and major destinations, and carries significant daily travel.

The corridor has aging infrastructure and evolving safety and mobility needs. While interim safety measures have improved conditions, they do not address underlying infrastructure needs or long-term corridor function.

The project includes a full renewal and redesign to support safer, more reliable movement and ensure the corridor continues to serve the city over time.

What is being delivered

Construction timing & impacts

The project includes full corridor reconstruction, conversion to two-way traffic and a range of transportation and safety improvements.

Key elements include:

Road and underground infrastructure renewal
Conversion from one-way to two-way operation
Upgraded intersections and traffic signals
Safer pedestrian crossings
Improved cycling and active transportation connections

Construction is planned for late 2026 through 2027 and will be coordinated with other infrastructure work in the lower city.

This coordinated approach helps reduce repeated disruption and improve coordination across the city.

During construction

Access to homes and businesses will be maintained throughout construction. Two lanes of traffic will remain open where possible. However, temporary changes will occur as work progresses, including lane shifts, changing traffic patterns and delays during construction activity.

Traffic will be managed to maintain safety and keep people moving through the corridor.

A safer, more connected Main Street

Once complete, the project will deliver a safer and more reliable Main Street that reflects how Hamilton is growing.

It will improve safety for all users, support more predictable travel and strengthen connections across the city’s transportation network.

This investment is part of a broader effort to build a more connected and accessible Hamilton.
