Green Energy Doors Open: See how Hamilton generates Renewable Energy and reduces Carbon Emissions
Hamilton, On - September 8, 2016 - The City of Hamilton is opening the doors to the Woodward Avenue Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant as part of Green Energy Doors Open this Friday..
Tour details
Interested visitors can join a guided walking tour to learn how the City generates renewable energy and reduces carbon emissions.
- First stop - Woodward Cogeneration Unit. Installed in 2006, the cogeneration unit uses approximately 15,600 m3 of compressed biogas per day to produce 13,200 megawatt-hours of renewable energy per year.
- Second stop - Biogas Purification Unit (BPU) where carbon dioxide and other impurities are separated from methane to produce renewable natural gas (pipe-line quality natural gas). The renewable natural gas is injected into the Union Gas grid through a transfer station. The BPU offsets more than 1,100 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent and produces toughly 20,000 gigajoules of natural gas per year.
The tour starts at 1:30 pm on Friday, Sept. 9, 2016, and should last approximately 60 minutes.
How to get there? Visitors can enter the Woodward Avenue Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant through the main entrance on Woodward Avenue opposite Glow Avenue.
