Update: Precautionary Boil Water Advisory for Brigadoon Drive Remains in Effect
HAMILTON, ON – September 23, 2016 – The Precautionary Boil Water Advisory issued by City of Hamilton Public Health Services to residents on Brigadoon Drive (from Apple Blossom Drive to Glenview Place, Matthew Street, Nature Court, Gledhill Crescent, Galt Street, Glenview Place, and Graywood Road) remains in effect until the safety of the water can be verified. Hamilton Water continues resampling and testing over the next 24 hours. Public Health is looking is looking to see two negative samples indicating the water is free of bacteria before the safety of the water can be verified. Residents will be notified when the precautionary advisory is lifted.
The Precautionary Boil Water Advisory was issued on September 21 due to lab test results that indicate excessive bacterial contamination existed in a water sample collected from a fire hydrant on Brigadoon Drive near Nature Court on September 19, 2016.
As a precaution, the Medical Officer of Health strongly urges affected residents to not use their water supply for drinking and other uses, as described below, until further notice.
Water safety tips
Use an alternate supply of water or boil your water at a rolling boil for at least one-minute before using it to:
- Drink
- Gargle, brush teeth, or rinse your mouth
- Make baby food or formula
- Wash fruits, vegetable and other food
- Wash dishes
- Make meals, ice, juices, coffee, tea, puddings, etc.
Bathing and washing
- Do not swallow any unboiled water used for showers and baths.
- Adults, teens and older children (who will follow instructions) can use unboiled water for baths and showers.
- Small children can be given sponge-baths instead of tub baths or showers.
- Washing hands, flushing toilets and doing laundry is not considered a risk.
Wash dishes by hand
- Use bottled or boiled water for washing and rinsing dishes.
- Wash dishes with soap and hot tap water and then rinse them in a bleach and water solution and let air dry.

Wash dishes in a dishwasher
- Use your dishwasher’s "hot" setting with the temperature booster on. It safely cleans dishes or
- For dishwashers without a "hot" setting or booster, after the end of the cycle, rinse them in a bleach and water solution and let air dry. See below for directions to make the solution.
Washing countertops and cutting/chopping boards
- Clean with soap and hot water. Rinse/wipe with bleach and water solution and let air dry.

Bleach & water solution
To make a bleach and water solution strong enough to kill any bacteria on dishes, cutlery and kitchen surfaces:
- Mix 5 ml (1teaspoon) of liquid household bleach in 1 litre (4cups or 1 quart) of tap water.
- Make it fresh daily.
- Do not reuse or store this solution.
- Keep it out of reach of children in a tightly closed container.
