Drawing from principles embedded within Cree worldview, and the author’s two decades of clinical expertise, Carry Your Heart walks readers through teachings from several prominent Indigenous Knowledge Holders from across Turtle Island to reveal how suffering — whether physical or emotional — can foster both personal insight and communal strength.
Louis Busch is a Bear Clan member of Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation, a registered psychotherapist and a behavioural scientist with over two decades of experience in mental health, forensic and community settings.
Dr. Savage Bear is a Cree scholar, writer, educator, and member of Montreal Lake Cree Nation. She is an Assistant Professor of Indigenous Studies at McMaster University, where her work brings together Indigenous literature, gender and sexuality, art, prison education, and the possibilities of Indigenous storytelling.
Her career has taken her from classrooms and prisons to research institutes and national projects. She is a recipient of the Governor General’s Gold Medal for her doctoral work and was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 2023. She was also part of the team behind the enormously successful Indigenous Canada course, which has reached hundreds of thousands of learners around the world.
