National Drowning Prevention Week 2026
July 19 to 25, 2026
National Drowning Prevention Week promotes awareness of the drowning problem in Canada and the need to take action to save lives. Drowning is preventable. National Drowning Prevention Week occurs every year in mid-July, when Canada’s drowning rate is at its highest. Join us at various City of Hamilton Recreation facilities for water safety tips and activities. This summer make water safety a priority and learn how to stay safe in and around water.

Test your skills: roll in, tread water for 1 minute, then swim 50 metres.

Open Swim
Open to patrons of all ages. Pools may be partitioned to safely accommodate aquatic activities.
Open Swim - Adapted
Open Swim for individuals who are living with additional needs or a disability and their families who require an adapted swim format. If required, one support person may be admitted free of charge.
Open Swim - Family
Intended for families where children 17 years of age and under must be directly accompanied by a responsible parent/guardian who is in the water. Adults 18 years of age and over are welcome to attend.
Open Swim - Women/Girls Only
For women/girls only, all ages. Programs are supervised by women leaders and where applicable, will have posted signage and window coverings to ensure privacy. Only those who self-identify as women/girls will be permitted in the program area, including children and infants.
Open Swim - Parent & Tot
Open to parents/guardians with children 5 years of age or younger.
Open Swim Youth 12-17
Open to patrons ages 12-17 years for a dedicated youth swim. Pools may be partitioned to safely accommodate aquatic activities.
Open Swim 18+
Open to patrons 18 years of age and older. Pools may be partitioned to safely accommodate aquatic activities.
Open Swim 55+
Open to patrons 55 years of age or older.
Length Swim
This program provides divided lanes of continuous length swimming. Assess the pace of other swimmers before choosing a lane and refer to the “Length/Lane Swimming Etiquette” sign to ensure a positive experience at the pool. Length swimmers must be able to swim full lengths comfortably.
Water fit
Class incorporating exercises in the water. Activities promoting movement and working muscle groups.
