Statement by Mayor Fred Eisenberger on the killing of George Floyd and anti-Black racism protests
HAMILTON, ON - Over the past few days, I have taken the time to listen, watch and learn as the world has come together to protest the tragic and unjustified killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis Police last week.
While the death of George Floyd has focused most attention on the United States, we know that in Canada we are not immune to anti-Black racism and racist behaviour.
I understand that I will never experience the pain and injustice experienced by Black people. I will, however, continue to further educate myself on the Black Lives Matter movement and reflect on what I, as an individual, can do to work better together with our Black-led community organizations.
My role as Chair of the Hamilton Police Services Board enables me to provide guidance and recommendations to our police force. I am committed to having these conversations on how we can continue to serve and protect all members of our City equitably and respectfully.
I have watched members of our community, while angry and outraged, peacefully protest and I am encouraged by the comradery surrounding these gatherings. I would like our community to remember that the COVID-19 virus is still out there and to please be safe while coming together.
Every single person in our city - no matter who you love, no matter what faith you practice, no matter your skin colour or where you come from - deserves to live and prosper in a safe and caring community.
I have said it before, and I will continue to say that there is no room for racism or hate in our city, our country or our world.
My deepest condolences go out to the family of George Floyd and to the families of Black individuals killed by systematic racism.
