Catch Basins and Street Drains
Catch basins, like the one pictured below, are designed only for rain water. Most do not include filtering or treatment systems. When people dump chemicals, garbage or throw pet waste in them, they are sending harsh pollutants directly into our local creeks and lakes.
Pollution prevention benefits not only the environment, but also your home plumbing and the City's infrastructure.
Catch Basin & Street Drain Use
Located along curbs, catch basins collect rain, melted snow and other water runoff. Most also lead directly to our local creeks, lake and harbour.
Disconnecting downspouts helps the environment, reduces the risks of basement and neighbourhood flooding and stress on City infrastructure.
Emptying Pools & Hot Tubs
Maintain your pool & hot tub according to the City by-law to ensure harsh chemicals don't enter the storm sewers and contaminate our waterways.
Household Fats, Oil and Grease
Fats, oil and grease can block your home's and neighbourhood's sewer pipes leading to expensive repairs and sewer back-ups.
Only pee, poo and toilet paper should be flushed down your toilet. Other items can lead to clogged pipes and back-ups in your home and neighbourhood.
Sewer Inspection Program
The program focuses on identifying areas where combined or sanitary sewer pipes are incorrectly connected to storm sewer pipes.
