Early morning house fire sends several people to Hospital
HAMILTON, ON - August 6, 2016 - The Hamilton Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire in a 2 ½ storey house at 70 Niagara Street, Hamilton at 4:30 am this morning. Upon arrival, firefighters reported a well involved fire with smoke and flames venting from the second floor of the home. Fire crews immediately went inside for an interior attack of the fire along with search and rescue operations. A multiple alarm was dispatched to the location to bring additional resources to the scene when the fire began to extend to the neighboring home, 74 Niagara Street. Fire crews were evacuated from inside 70 Niagara Street as the building had become unsafe and continued with a defensive attack of the fire at 70 Niagara St and interior attack at 74 Niagara St.
The home was occupied by eleven occupants at the time of the fire with one person uninjured, seven were transported to hospital and three remain unaccounted for at this time.
Damage to 70 Niagara Street is estimated at $200,000 in total and 74 Niagara Street at $50,000 the cause of the fire is undetermined at this time. An investigator from the Fire Marshal’s Office has been requested to assist in determining the cause of this fire.
