Evening fire at building under renovations
HAMILTON, ON – July 1, 2016 – Hamilton Fire Department responded to a report of a fire involving a property formerly known as the Jewish Community Centre located at 1030 Lower Lions Club Road at approximately 6:30 pm this evening. Upon arrival, crews reported heavy smoke and fire conditions at the rear of the building and as a result the alarm was then upgraded to a multiple alarm bringing additional fire crews to the scene.
Extinguishment of the fire was difficult due to heavy smoke conditions but was brought quickly under control by an aggressive interior and exterior fire attack limiting damage to the rear of the building and the air supported structure which covers the playing surface.
The fire appears to have originated at the rear of the building where contractors had been working earlier in the day and caused $750,000 in damages. The building is undergoing renovations to an indoor soccer facility.
There were no reported injuries to the public or firefighters. The Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified of this fire because of the large dollar loss.
