Premises Heavily Damaged In Late Afternoon Fire
HAMILTON, ON – July 21, 2016 – The Hamilton Fire Department responded to a report of structure fire at the rear of a premise located at 143 Grant Avenue South, Hamilton at approximately 4:20 pm this afternoon.
Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed a working fire at the rear, 1st floor of this two storey dwelling occupied as a duplex. Due to the extremely hot weather conditions and the proximity to neighbouring properties, additional fire crews were called to the scene. The fire was quickly extinguished with search and rescue operations, confirming that all occupants had exited the premises.
While the fire was contained to the ground floor unit, there was extensive smoke damage throughout and damage is estimated at approximately $200,000. There were no reported injuries to the public or firefighters but two cats perished in the fire. The suspected cause is careless cooking practices.
The Hamilton Fire Department would like to remind the public to exercise caution and safe cooking practices including never leaving the combustible materials unattended near a stove.
