Firefighters respond to fire at McMaster University
HAMILTON, ON – July 7, 2016 – Hamilton Fire Department responded to a report of a basement fire at the E.T. Clarke building on the University Campus shortly after 12:30 pm today. Upon arrival, crews found heavy fire conditions in the basement level that had extended to the floors above in the building that was currently undergoing partial demolition for the removal of boiler equipment.
Due to the extreme weather conditions, volume of fire encountered and the interior configuration of the building made firefighting operations even more difficult. A multiple alarm was instituted to bring additional crews to the scene. Although the fire was knocked down within an hour of the arrival of crews, additional personnel were required to remain on the site for several hours extinguishing hot spots and ensuring that there was no fire extension.
There were no reported injuries to the public or firefighters despite the heat and high humidity. The cause of the fire was listed as undetermined. McMaster University staff will assess the site to determine damages to their building and equipment contained within.
